The Lake Minnetonka Half Marathon, the first and longest operating half marathon in the state of Minnesota, started back in 1980 and drew thousands of runners every year. Runners experienced the charm of Wayzata, Orono, Minnetonka Beach, Tonka Bay, and Shorewood en route to a glorious finish in Excelsior. It weaved its way around Lake Minnetonka's glisteneing waters, down winding roads, and, most importantly, through every participant’s heart.

It is with great sadness that we announce our difficult decision to discontinue the Lake Minnetonka Half Marathon. After thorough discussions with local law enforcement, we have come to the mutual agreement that we cannot guarantee a safe route for the participants of this race. Runner safety is our No.1 priority, and too many external factors on the local roadways have arisen to ensure it.

This beloved race, recognized by Runner’s World as one of the best half marathons in the country, became an annual tradition and celebration for so many in our greater Twin Cities community. It also raised thousands of dollars to help protect and conserve Lake Minnetonka itself, whose shining waters inspired participation from runners from all over the country.

We are proud to have organized a race that brought so much joy to our community for so many years. We are grateful for the countless people, organizations, cities, police departments, and businesses that have made this event possible. We, along with thousands upon thousands of runners who love this event, will miss it dearly.
Our hearts may be heavy, but they are also full - full of memories and gratitude for each and every one of you who participated in this incredible event.
